She Was - Micro-chipped!!
![]()
After the disappearance a year ago, of her Jack Russell Terrier, Dolly, Candy King has fought to get all dogs routinely scanned for microchips at vets, rescues, pounds etc. Candy supported by Doglost now launches Dolly's Directive. Here Candy explains
There are many dogs on the
Doglost website
that are permanently identifiable either by microchip or tattoo, yet they are
still missing. We want it to be compulsory for all organisations coming into
contact with dogs to scan for microchips and check for tattoos (vets, police,
dog pounds, re-homing centres, charities etc). This to include existing and new
dogs handled by above mentioned organisations. Many stolen/missing dogs would be
re-united with their grieving owners if this were the case. Surely a ‘Duty of
Care’ is owed to anyone that permanently identifies their pet. This is currently
not the case!
Such is my frustration with the
current system that I have decided to start Dolly’s Directive
I cannot fight this battle alone and I desperately need your help

An English Setter Orange Belton Male has been seen in the A451 Kidderminster to Stourbridge area. The area has been combed and no further sightings have been reported. This dog is very timid and seemed afraid. We are not sure if it could be Henry. Henry's owner has been to search and left posters for contact details. Please keep looking. This dog was just wandering along this very busy road.

May 2004
Article in the ESA Newsletter Spring/Summer
In November of 2003 the Rescue was contacted regarding two ES in Spain. We were asked if we could help in any way as, sadly, first one and then the other of their English owners had died.
When I spoke to Irene (who was out in Spain) the Sister of the Bracken and Willow’s deceased owner. It was decided that there was no other option for them other than to come into the UK and do the full six months quarantine. I had discussed perhaps doing all or some of the time out in Spain (under the Pet’s Passport Scheme) as we do with the dogs that come in under BONES. This turned out not to be an option as there was no-one who Irene felt she could trust to look after the dogs and make sure that all of the procedures needed to qualify for the pets passport would be carried out. (This turned out to be a wise move, as will be revealed)
After several phone calls over the next few days to Irene, who was still out in Spain, the ‘plan’ went into full steam ahead mode and both Bracken and Willow were booked into Ladyhaye Quarantine Kennels in Surrey. I had spoken to Mr Jenkins the Rescue’s Treasurer and Mr Watt the Rescue’s Chairman and the ‘green’ light was given straight away. I think that Irene was overwhelmed by the speed with which the Rescue acted and the importance we placed on the welfare of both dogs. She was very concerned for them, still is in fact. She was also trying to find a home for her Brother and Sister in Law’s elderly Great Dane (which I am so glad to be able to report that she did).
On a cold, dull November day Bracken and Willow flew into the UK and then onto Ladyhaye kennels. They would be kennelled together and most importantly they would be ‘safe’. All we had to do now was to get them through the long six months ordeal. They needed visitors… I was hundreds of miles away and not able to visit – but I wanted ES people to be able to keep an eye on them and report back anything amiss. They also need some company to break up the long empty days. So I turned to the Internet and placed a ‘visitors wanted’ on the English Setter Web Site. This somehow got back to the kennels who were not amused. I think they envisaged coach outings of people all dropping in to see Bracken and Willow. I pointed out that this would not be the case. The kennels dug their heals in, saying only I could visit them – which was ludicrous. When I said this was impossible they seemed not to want to budge on the matter. So I complained! I was adamant that they were going to receive visitors, under NO circumstances would we allow these dogs to spend six months with no-one visiting them. Eventually we reached a compromise! They would allow 4 to 5 different people visiting (not all together) so long as they rang before hand and said who they were. It was suggested to me that ringing before (giving warning) was not a good idea, but I did not want to risk loosing what we had gained, and as the weeks rolled on the ringing before arriving was forgotten about.
Next task was to find those visitors. I cannot thank the people who did visit them enough, and still are visiting (at the time of writing this). Without these kind people then both Bracken and Willow’s stay in kennels would have been a lot less bearable.
Those thanks are due to:
Lyn Davies, who has been driving from Greenwich twice a week. She bought them some lovely new vet beds and always asked and checked on their welfare. If she found anything she was not happy with, she would ask if it could ‘please’ be addressed. It was Lyn who told me all about Bracken’s (an Orange Belton) ‘huge grin’ and how his head rocks from side to side, and also what a ‘wimp’ he is! How Willow (also Orange) is a very pretty, gentle lady, with eyes to die for; Bracken’s uncoordinated playing as he blundered about chasing his toys in the kennel; and how he adores Willow and she – bless her, ‘puts’ up with him with such grace and charm!
Penel Malby, who made them both a coat each, the kennels were cold and sometimes draughty and they had just left a warmer climate. She took them a Kong each (a super almost non-destructive dog toy - OK, it lasts longer then most toys…) She sent me some photos for the Rescue web site. As with Lyn she also brushed them. Bracken came to love this and would close his eyes and fall asleep. Again providing reports on their welfare and how they were fairing.
Bernadette Bishop and her Husband, treats, brushing, and company.
Jenny Day and her Husband more treats etc.
Jean Warburton who sent Mark Melon for Christmas. Those of you into browsing the pet’s shops for dog toys will know all about Mark Melon and his other fruity companions.
Minna and Patrick who have offered a home and will be adopting both Bracken and Willow. Along with toys, more photos for web site they also took home-made Yorkshire puddings.
Home-made food seemed to be on the menu. Lyn told me, on one afternoon as she sat with them both a lovely smell wafted across the kennels. It was coming from the kennel of a dog that had come in from Rhodesia. On closer sniffing it turned out to be spaghetti bolognaise. Apparently Bracken, Willow and Lyn were queuing up at the kennel door for their portion.
Along the way there has been problems and frustrations. Willow came into season so she had to be split up from Bracken. He barked and barked and was very distressed. Bracken has also been treated regularly for colitis and has been given injections as well as antibiotics. Sadly this has meant that treats have had to be restricted. He then had an eye injury, so he has been in the wars a bit. It could be the stress and upset of living in a kennels which has not helped the situation. We all hope that once he gets settled into his new home this will all settle down.
There have also been times when most of the people visiting have left feeling sad. If it was cold, or the dogs looked slightly depressed – then it was hard for the visitors to just walk away and leave them. I know that in some cases tears have been shed.
There was also the very sad case of two poodles that came into quarantine under the Pet’s Passport Scheme. The Vet in Spain had messed it up, so these poor dogs had to be sent back. This greatly upset one of Bracken and Willow’s visitors. She said the two small dogs sat shaking in a bed in the kennels their eyes huge with fright. There was no-one to meet the cost of the quarantine for these two little dogs. So, as sad at times the past months have been for Bracken and Willow – they are fortunate. It is your support that made all of this and all of the other work we do possible. We have also been able to make sure that they received any veterinary treatment they needed along the way. There does not seem any point in bringing them into the UK to then just leave any medical problems unattended. So, on behalf of Bracken and Willow and the other dogs who have come the Rescue’s way over the years ‘Thank You’ for your support. If you could see Bracken’s huge grin – you would also see just how thankful he is!
Bracken and Willow will be ‘released’ in very early May. A new life will then begin for them both. As do most English Setters, they will move on without a backward glance and put all of this behind them.
I will leave the last comment to Patrick and Minna
Willow is so pretty. Brack’s is
handsome as well, with his big cheesy grin.
Thank You
Coleen Taylor
Bracken and Willow are the two ES that English Setter Rescue are putting through the six months quarantine. After their owners IN Spain died - there was no alternative other then to fly them to the UK and place them in quarantine.
Both are doing well and thanks are due to Lyn Davies and Penel Malby for their time and concern in going to visit both dogs on a regular basis.
Penel has made them a coat each, (see pictures) and generally kept an eye on their well being. Lyn has taken vet bed for them both, toys, treats and liaised with the staff at Ladyhaye Kennels who are looking after them.
Although initially placed together, they had to be split up when Willow came into season. That was four weeks ago and they should both be back together soon. Much to the relief of Bracken - but I think that Willow will probably say 'What have you put me back with him for?'
The staff have placed a chair in Willow's kennel and she resides on it like a Queen on her throne. Apparently the staff call her a star!
Bracken is a big daft lump and in Lyn's own words 'he cracks me up, when he smiles at me. His head rocks from side to side as this huge grin covers his face!' He is one big baby.
I would like to thank Penel, Patrick Hobb-Chambers and Minna Wilkinson for these lovely photos. Patrick Hobb Chambers and Minna have also been to visit and I 'thank them' also for keeping me up to date.
